She's been called "the voice of Austin" and "an angel with hell-scorched wings." A singer, guitarist, and song stylist/writer, Kelly Willis possesses a pure, classic country voice once described by Rolling Stone as "throaty, lonesome and blue." Her sultry vocals, "drop-dead natural-blond beauty" (Texas Monthly), and a keen sense of song have gained her press accolades and a legion of fans that span the country and rock genres.
Kelly Willis, named by NPR as “alternative country’s golden goddess,” returns after five years with the much-anticipated Translated From Love. The album is the follow-up to the acclaimed Easy (2002), of which Rolling Stone said, “Kelly Willis’ sweet, burnished voice practically spells heartache... Willis drapes her yearning voice over the tough but funny lyrics...”
Singer-songwriter, Kelly Willis was signed by MCA Records' country division in 1990 and widely embraced by critics as a torchbearer for "new traditionalism'. Her raucous vocals proved immediately popular, so much so that the band was renamed Kelly And The Fireballs in her honour. Willis and Palermo relocated to Austin after graduation and established a new band, Radio Ranch. The band impressed Nanci Griffith, who arranged an audition at MCA Records.
